Today was the second day of fleet racing in San Francisco, with 11 teams competing in the two trials valid for the America’s Cup World Series Championship.

The first fleet race started in westerly 10/14 knot winds. On the starting line Luna Rossa Swordfish was positioned in the middle, Piranha closer to the buoy. Both boats sailed in close contact with the rest of the fleet and it was Luna Rossa Piranha who came in third after overtaking Russell Coutts, behind J.P.Morgan – BAR (winner) and Artemis White; Luna Rossa Swordfish closed the race in ninth place.

In the second fleet race Luna Rossa Swordfish was given a penalty for OCS, thereby forfeiting a its chances to catch up with the fleet. Piranha, sixth at the first mark, was penalized by a series of unfavorable wind shifts at the beginning of the first downwind leg and closed the race in tenth place. Luna Rossa Swordfish, boxed in the back on the starting line, was unable to regain positions and finished the race in 11th place.

Max Sirena, Luna Rossa Challenge 2013 skipper, declared: 'This event has been tough from the start, but we expected it: we have made changes in our crew to give new team members a chance to get learn about these boats that are still new to them. What we need now are hours on the water and these races are an opportunity to make progress and compete against top sailors whose level is increasingly high.

The positive thing now is that we have good boat speed and, above all, a determined and talented team that has proved, with its results, to be capable of excellent performances. Tomorrow, as always, we will be back on the water ready to win.'
