America's Cup: New Zealand enter team in Red Bull Youth America’s Cup
|
Yachting New Zealand has announced that it has entered a team to sail the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup 2013, set to take centre stage on San Francisco Bay between the Louis Vuitton Cup and the Americas Cup in 2013. YNZ has invited applications from eligible sailors keen to be part of the New Zealand Team. Late last week, 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist, Peter Burling was announced as the new helmsman for Team Korea, in the America's Cup World Series to be sailed in the same AC45's. At 21 years Burling is inside the age bracket for the Red Bull series. Several other members of the 2012 New Zealand Olympic team and the wider NZL Sailing teamare also within the eligible age bracket for the series, which is being staged for the first time. Billed as a pathway for the world’s most talented youth sailors to enter the prestigious and exclusive America’s Cup scene, organisers see the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup as an opportunity for up and comers to show case their talent to the massive international audience already focussing their attention on San Francisco. While Emirates Team New Zealand continues to focus their attention on their bid to return the America’s Cup Trophy to New Zealand in 2013, Yachting New Zealand has submitted an entry for this national youth team with their support. The YNZ says it will manage the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Team, calling on the expertise and insight that Emirates Team New Zealand can bring to the table with a collaborative approach planned in the sailor selection process. National teams with a crew of six, who must comply with age parameters as well as a combined crew weight restriction, will sail the AC45 wing-sailed catamarans currently raced by teams competing in the Americas Cup World Series. Those teams will supply AC45 boats for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup eliminating the need for the youth teams entering to build or supply their own boat. A four day event is planned for first – 6th September 2013 with two short course 30 minute fleet races in the schedule. To be eligible to sail for New Zealand at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup 2013 you must…. - Be at least 19 years of age on December 31, 2013 and under 25 years of age on December 31, 2013. - Hold a current New Zealand passport (or have been living in New Zealand for a period of at least five years immediately prior to October 1, 2013.) - Sailors who are eligible and interested should email an expression of interest to Yachting New Zealand.
