Despite not being mentioned in yesterday's short media release from the US Defender, postponing their Media Day, it is now been confirmed that Oracle Team USA, have christened and splashed their first AC72.
A video released today shows the 72ft catamaran being christened, and then lowered into the waters of San Francisco Bay by crane. She was also given a tow test, usually done to check for leaks, with the hulls under pressure.
The wingsail was not fitted for the splash event which is a significant project milestone in any build campaign, as it usually marks the point at which the boat is handed from the build to the sailing support team, meaning the boat is in commission.
The yacht has been christened '17' - a favorite sail number of team boss, Larry Ellison. The 120ft trimaran which won the America's Cup in 2010 was also named USA-17.
No further release has been received from the team, and it is assumed that sailing will not take place until next week.
