All racing was cancelled on Day 5 of the ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta Skandia sail for Gold, as Thursday afternoon’s storm continued overnight and all day Friday at the 2012 Olympic sailing venue in Weymouth. The Paralympic classes were the first to be cancelled in the morning, but other classes had longer to wait until racing was called off for everybody at 2:30pm local time. For most sailors, this signalled an early end to their regatta. The Paralympic classes were always scheduled to end one day before the rest. Tomorrow, only the top ten in each Olympic class will race in the double point medal race to determine their final ranking, and the Womens Match Racing will endeavour to finish the finals. Women’s 470 crew Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie will go into the medal round with a nine point lead over the second placed boat, and are guaranteed to finish inside the top four no matter their race outcome. Paul Snow Hansen and Jason Saunders in the Men’s 470 fleet are amongst a much tighter lead pack, they are eight points off the lead boat of Australians Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page, and could finish anywhere from Gold to fifth with this race. JP Tobin, Andrew Murdoch and Andy Maloney will also be progressing to the medal round, while the Women’s Match racing crew has a busy day to complete their racing schedule starting with the quarter finals. The action starts early for the Match Racing Women tomorrow, the intention is for them to begin a 8:00am local time (7:00pm NZT) as they still have the quarter finals, semis and finals to be raced. The rest of the classes start at 10:00 (9:00pm NZT) with the lasers up first. Follow it all with live tracking, audio commentary and a blog on the event website.
