Dean's Diary: ACWS - When the Sailing gives way for the Show

Dean Barker, Emirates Team NZ skipper and Director of Kiwi Yachting Consultants and Nexus AB, reports from Venice, Italy from the America's Cup World Series, in which he helms Emirates Team NZ . 22 May 2012: Tough finish in Venice Super Sunday ended up not being quite so super for us in Venice. The fleet was confronted with a 1-4 knot breeze which certainly did not help create much of a spectacle. Our focus on the final race was to be aggressive at the start. In nearly every race in the confined racing in the canal the first boat to the first mark won the race. We had a nice start and led around the first mark, but in the very light and fluky breeze we ran out of wind in the first gybe and had to watch as the entire fleet sailed into a windless hole. Unfortunately for us we emerged from what became a raft up in 4th place which is where we finished. This gave us a final overall placing of third. It is certainly very disappointing after the way it had been shaping up but in this style of stadium racing, sailing gives way for the show. It is unfortunate as it does nothing to enhance the support for our sport and drifting around the course in less than four knots is like watching paint dry. On the positive side we have been on the podium for every event of the season, and with the final event in Newport in just over a month, there is still plenty to play for. Back to NZ now and interested to see how the NZ Boat Show went over the last few days. Dean To read earlier editions of Dean Barker's blog click here
