The big news from the racing world is the announcement that Sperry Top-Sider has stepped-up to title sponsorship of the US Sailing Team, now freshly re-minted the US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider. This new sponsorship is effective immediately and isn’t planned to sunset until December 31, 2016, giving the sailors and the company plenty of time to develop a strong partnership. The team’s new emblem will be unveiled at the Sail for Gold Regatta, to be held this June in Weymouth, England, and you can bet your last stern plug that all team members are sporting fresh Sperry kicks.
'We’ve had a close, successful relationship with Sperry for a long time, but this represents a whole new level of their commitment and our partnership,' said Dean Brenner, the Chairman of US Sailing’s Olympic Sailing Committee. 'The Games begin in three months, and this significant expansion of our relationship comes at exactly the correct time, with an extension through the 2016 Games. We are thrilled to have a partner like Sperry, and our athletes will benefit immensely from all the resources they bring to the table.' Offshore, the battle is hot in Leg Six of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), which is taking the five-strong fleet of fully crewed Volvo Open 70s from Itajai, Brazil to Miami, Florida. Emirates Team New Zealand (ENTZ) is currently leading the charge, but the fleet has now split, with ENTZ and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing hugging the coast, while Telefonica and Groupama are taking a more offshore routing; Puma Ocean Racing is taking the middle path, but erring on the offshore edge. 'There’s a fair amount of instability inshore, but it’s hard to judge how many miles away you need to be,' said Groupama 4’s skipper, Franck Cammas. 'Our aim is to gradually distance ourselves from the Brazilian coast.'

And in the Global Ocean Race, leaders Conrad Colman and Scott Cavanough, aboard Cessna Citation continue to bleed precious miles to rivals Financial Crisis and Phesheya Racing due to their private light airs and a huge fleet separation. 'One of the bad parts of having such a big lead is that it puts the leader in such a completely different weather system,' reported Cavanough. 'Hopefully we have stemmed the loss of miles, but we’ll have to wait and see.' Get the full scoop, inside.
