The two day Sail Port Stephens Junior Regatta, being sailed from Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club just in front of Salamander Shores, commenced today at 12 noon.

34 boats started this inaugural school holiday regatta; a mixture of O’Pen Bics, Sabots and a Laser 4.7. It’s a great venue and a wonderful stretch of water and on day 1 the excited participants were greeted with eight to ten knots of breeze and patches of sunshine peeking through the cloud cover. It would not surprise observers to see a hundred or more boats entering this event in a couple of years time.

A detailed report on this new junior initiative will be published tomorrow.

Today, Thursday 19 April, was a lay day for large numbers of the cruising fleet who sailed in the Commodores Cup and will be sailing on and competing in the Sail Port Stephens Trophy Series, commencing this Friday.

Tomorrow as part of Sail Port Stephens 2012, the Elliott 7 class will conduct their Australian Championship.

A hot fleet of 12-14 boats will face the starter’s gun and leading the charge will be Mike Green, the current Australian champion in Evergreen, with its distinctive bright green sails.

Hot on his heels will be Aaron Terry in Selden Deck Hardware with Jan (Cloggs) Scholten in the crew. Former NSW champion Peter Wilson will be racing with his 'ring-in' Queensland crew and local skippers Matt Bonser from Port Stephens and Justin Mitchell from Lake Macquarie will be dangerous on home waters. A dark horse for the title is 18 foot dinghy champion Andrew Chapman.

The Elliott 7 Australian Championship Racing commences Friday 20th on Salamander Bay at 12 noon, with the nine race series concluding on Sunday 22nd.

The Performance Racing and Cruising Divisions contesting the Sail Port Stephens 2012 Trophy Series are scheduled to start off d’Alboras Marina at 11:00 am Friday. The Racing fleet, in two divisions will sail a Passage race on Friday and Sunday and will sail three windward leeward races o Saturday

The IRC Grand Prix fleet will be racing offshore in two divisionsi n a six race series over the next three days from 11:30am. Friday
