Dean's Diary: Day 1 in Windy Naples
|
Dean Barker, Emirates Team NZ skipper and Director of Kiwi Yachting Consultants Nexus AB, reports from Naples, Italy from the America's Cup World Series, in which he helms Emirates Team NZ . 10 April 2012: Day 1 in Naples Today was the first day of racing in Naples and what a day it was! The fleet was greeted with big waves and a 18-22 knot breeze which provided many ups and downs for the teams. We finished the day in a three way tie for the lead with Oracle and Energy. We had a third and first place in the two races sailed. We struggled a bit today upwind for speed and have identified a few areas where we can improve. Downwind. Went really well and gained a few places. The waves upwind though really punished you if you were out of whack and tacking the boats in waves is really hard. Artemis had a capsize today in the first race and fortunately no one was injured. It can happen so easily and they just were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Looking forward to day two tomorrow. Forecast is for slightly tamer conditions Dean To read earlier editions of Dean Barker's blog click here
