The New Zealand Star crew of Hamish Pepper and Jim Turner continue to lead the two man keelboat event in the third round of the ISAF World Cup at Palma, Spain.
Despite only placing ninth and eighth in the two races sailed the New Zealand crew, who have yet to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, extended their lead over the second placed Spanish crew skippered by Fernando Echavarri. 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Iain Percy is in third place overall.
The Star crew are the only New Zealand crew to be ranked in the top 10 overall at the World Cup event.
In the Womens Singlehander, Sara Winther dropped from 12th overall after the first day to 24th, after failing to finish the third race. She placed 11th in the fourth and final race of the day.
Top two handed womens crew of Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie also dropped down the points table to lie 20th overall, in a 52 boat fleet, after placing 18th and 33rd in the two races sailed. They won the first race in the event.
In the mens two handed event, Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders lie in 23rd overall after placing 25th and 12th in the two races sailed in the yellow fleet. Because of entry numbers, the mens event is sailed in two fleets and the results are then combined. A total of 93 crews have entered the mens event, and the first cut will be to make the Gold fleet - which will be the top 46 boats after the qualifying round has finished.
In the heavyweight mens singlehander, Dan Slater had an excellent day finishing seventh and first sailing in the Finn class, That position has not really lifted him much on the points table, as he is still dragging a black flag starting disqualification from the first race. However if discards were allowed at this pint in the regatta he would be in a creditable seventh place overall. He is currently listed in 16th place with all races counted.
The Womens Match Racing crew, skippered by Stephanie Hazard, are lying in mid fleet having won four of their eight races sailed in Group B of the two group womens competition.
