London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing events are being held in Weymouth and Portland harbour during Sunday 29th July to Saturday 11 August.

The Spanish Sailing Federation Gala took place in Madrid at the headquarters of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) naming Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos Sailors of the Year. They will represent Spain at the London 2012 Games along with another 12 qualifying sailors.

The recognition comes for their achievement of earning themselves world and European champions in the 470 class last year.

The event also paid recognition to all of the nation’s sailors who have participated at the Olympics since 1924. To note Alejandro Abascal, now the head of Spain’s sailing team, was given the Olympic insignia from COE and Madrid 2020 Bid Committee President Alejandro Blanco. He won the first Spanish sailing gold medal with Miguel Noguer in the Flying Dutchman class at the Moscow Games in 1980.

All in all Spain has taken home 17 Olympic medals in sailing, 11 gold and at the national Barcelona Games in 1992 spirit was so high they nailed five there and then in home waters.

Future Olympic champions with much potential were sailors Jordi Xammar and Alex Claville who earned the recognition as Young Sailors of 2011, and the emerging trio of Patricia Coro, Carlos Robles and Florian Trittel who received commemorative plaques.

These athletes are 2020 hopefuls and should Madrid get the nod to host the summer Games they will set sail in Valencia seeking to win more medals for the home team.

Madrid is competing against Baku, Doha, Istanbul, and Tokyo to stage the 2020 Games. The IOC session in Buenos Aires will decide the final city on September 7, 2013.
