RS:X World Championships 2012 kick off on Thursday 22 March in Cadiz, Spain when Australian Sailing Team member Jessica Crisp will line up against the best windsurfers in the world..
Crisp will race in a capacity fleet of 80 in the final World Championship for the class before the London 2012 Olympic Games begin at the end of July.
The 2012 RS:X World Championships is also the final Olympic Games qualification event for the class though Crisp has already ensured that Australia, and herself, will be on the starting line in Weymouth following her 17th place finish at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships last December.
London 2012 will be Crisp’s fourth straight Olympic Games appearance with this week’s World Championship an important lead in event and her first European regatta of the year.
Crisp has been training extensively at home over recent months, with a number of strong performances at events both in Australia and New Zealand.
'I’ve had a successful couple of months training with wins at Sail Auckland, the Australian RS:X Championships and the New Zealand RS:X Championships,' said Crisp. 'I feel like I’ve done everything possible to prepare for these Worlds given the geographical challenges we face coming from down under and without a team of people to sail with at home.'
Racing begins in Spain on Thursday morning and continues until Wednesday 28 March with a maximum of 16 races scheduled for the event.
'It’s still quite cold here but the forecast is for great wind so I’m looking forward to racing getting underway tomorrow,' said Crisp. 'We’ve got a full fleet of sailors which is great, my body is feeling great and the mind is good.'
The men’s fleet is also at capacity with 120 sailors competing with three Australians having made the trip to Spain.
Patrick Vos, Jimmy Levy and Luke Baillie will all take part in the event.
Just like in the women’s fleet Australia has already qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games but at this stage a representative has not been selected.
