Volvo Ocean Race Leg 2 trophies awarded

'Team Telefonica, skippered by Iker Martinez from Spain win the award for first place for leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12, CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, skippered by Chris Nicholson from Australia take second and PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG, skippered by Ken Read from the USA take third. - Volvo Ocean Race Leg 2'    Ian Roman/Volvo Ocean Race©

Puma Ocean Racing powered by Berg took the DHL Shore Crew Award for the Volvo Ocean Race's Leg 2. The public prize giving ceremony was on the main stage in the Destination Village on the Abu Dhabi waterfront.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand were also nominated, with Puma being awarded the trophy in part for the terrific work of their media team led by Lisa Ramsperger and Bridgid Murphy.

Particular mention was made of Puma’s latest move to fly in a team of bloggers to cover the Abu Dhabi stopover which attracted considerable media attention in its own right.

The delighted Puma shore crew took to the stage to receive their trophy from Frank Ungerer, Country Manager DHL Express UAE and Henning von Beetzen, Global Customer Manager, DHL Global Customer Solutions.

The IWC Schaffhausen Speed Record Challenge trophy for the furthest 24 hour run during the second leg from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi was presented to Franck Cammas’ Groupama sailing team by Maxime Ferte, Regional Director of IWC Middle East.

The Leg 2 third place trophy was presented to Ken Read’s Puma Ocean Racing powered by Berg by Faisal Al Sheikh - Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority Events Manager.

'We are pleased to be in the hunt,' skipper Read said. 'Hopefully we will be able to build off this.'

The Leg 2 second place trophy was awarded to Chris Nicholson’s Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand by Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management, Volvo Cars.

The final presentation of the ceremony was the trophy for the overall winner of Leg 2 which was awarded to Iker Martínez’s Team Telefónica by Mats Nilsson, Senior Vice President Sponsorship and Events, Volvo Group.

Skipper Martínez, who also won the opening leg of the race from Alicante to Cape Town, said: 'Obviously it's always nice to step up to receive the winner's trophy. The only thing is that Leg 3 is now a lot closer than Leg 2.

'So we're now focused on the in-port, which is in two days' time, and the leg start, which is in three, but when things have gone well it's good to spend a bit of time thinking about it. It's always a joyful moment.
