ISAF Sailing World Championships – Hard day for U.S. Team GetSailing

Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships second day continued with the Women’s Match Racing in Fremantle, Australia. Racing took place on the Swan River/Freemantle Inner Harbour within close view with live commentary and a grandstand that today was filled with fans despite the light wind.

In uncharacteristic fashion, Fremantle’s famous 'Doctor' didn’t show itself, in fact it stayed away the entire day forcing ISAF Sailing World Championships’ race committee to abandon women’s match racing. U.S. Sailing Team AlphaGraphics’ Genny Tulloch (Sausalito, Calif.), Alice Manard Leonard (East Haven, Conn.) and Jenn Chamberlin (Washington, D.C.) were the only Americans to race today. The team, known collectively as 'Team GetSailing', won their lone race against the Croatian team.

'We are looking forward to meeting the Doctor,' joked Tulloch. 'In fact, we’ve never been so excited to see a doctor before. In all seriousness, it was a hard day, we had to stay mentally prepared all day, and that’s the way it is in light air and shifty venues.'

Racing continues on Monday in Women’s Match Racing with Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.), Molly Vandemoer (Stanford, Calif.) and Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.) returning to the round robin competition. Also scheduled to race are the Women’s RS:X, Laser Radial, Finn and Men’s 470 classes.

Most of the USSTAG athletes not racing spent the day finalizing registration, measurement or some on-the-water training. Olympian Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./Washington, D.C.) blogged about his preparations with crew Ian Coleman (Annapolis, Md.) in the Star class.

'We’ve had early-morning dock-off times the last couple of days to make the most of the morning offshore breezes and avoid the midday light air and afternoon heat (well into the 90s the last couple days). While I think most of us will welcome the steadier Doctor’s sea breeze, it has been good to see what havoc the offshore breeze can bring in terms of squirrely, puffy and shifty stuff. The sea breeze is legendary here though and we’ll have to beware cursing its absence, lest it come back with a vengeance.

The Star, along with Men’s RS:X, Laser, Women’s 470 and 49er, race during the second week of this event.
