Camper: Philosophy and a wise man are a big help in Volvo Ocean Race

Camper's MCM Hamish Hooper blogs on Day 3 of Leg 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race:

Talk about chalk and cheese. In so little time of this race around the world has taken only a couple of days to experience each of the spectrum of conditions we will face.

Although a nice reprieve from the brutal first 30 hours of the race, the light and at times non-existent winds have already become somewhat trying.

As noisy as it is as these boats are going full steam ahead and slamming off waves, it is equally unnerving and eerily quiet when the wind dies away. When we get a puff the swish of water moving past the hull as we move forward is always a better sound than a flogging sail and a gentle lap of water tapping at the hull.

And at the moment it looks like we might be facing the same conditions and same noises for potentially the next couple of days.

Yesterday was Confucius’ Birthday- maybe he would have had some good philosophical words to deal with the frustration like, '11 men in a fast VOR boat doing two knots is stupid'

Some people couldn’t argue with that, but I’m sure all the sailors in this race would, This is just another intricate challenge of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Nico’s advice on sailing in these conditions, 'Always keep the boat moving, as high performance as these boats are, if they stop they need a lot of power to get moving again. So even if you are not going in the direction you want, just keep the boat moving and eventually you will find the direction you need.'

This does have a certain philosopher’s tone to it I think, but so it should be. Nico is a very wise man.

At 0500 this morning its seems a bit like we have turned on the gas burners and are going along nicely at around 10 knots, which is the fastest we have been for probably the last 24 hours. It would be nice to know the other boats haven’t got such luxury, somehow I doubt they wouldn’t. Hopefully this pressure will last and our days of almost drifting are behind us… I’m not so convinced.
