Mike Sanderson, skipper of Team Sanya reflects on the damage caused on the first day.
The former Telefonica Blue, from the 2008/09 Race is well tested, and has sustained major damage to her starboard hull chine around the area of the chainplates. The suspicion is that this was caused by hitting an underwater object in the 35kt winds. The hull is punctured and delaminated in a localised area - lending further credence to the theory that she struck something.
Sanderson says the damage is worse than feared and they are not in an optimal place to undertake a thorough repair, although the boat will likely be inspected by their boat captain and shore crew, today, and decisions made from there.
Sanderson believes that Team Sanya will not sail the first leg on her own bottom, and currently she is not really in a state to be moved except by land.
