Volvo Ocean Race - Sailing Legends launches in Alicante
|
Volvo Ocean Race sets off from Alicante, Spain tomorrow 5th November 2011. Sailing Legends, the story of the world's greatest ocean race, written by Bob Fisher and Barry Pickthall launched today in Alicante and is available for purchase for €50 / £40. 'I love it. It is truly an amazing book, its brought my memories from the two races Flyer entered flooding back. It is a great tribute to all ‘Sailing Legends!' Conny van Rietschoten – Skipper of the winning yachts Flyer in 1977-78 and 1981-82 The Volvo Ocean Race – and its predecessor, the Whitbread Round the World Race spans 40 years, 10 races and more than 300,000 miles across the most inhospitable seas. Over the years, close to 2,000 men and women have taken part aboard 156 yachts beginning with those designed more for graceful living than screaming around Cape Horn. In those Corinthian days, crews enjoyed private cabins, hot showers and fully equipped galleys – a far cry from the purpose built, no compromise Volvo 70’s of today crewed by obsessed professionals. Millions have been spent, legends created and five men have died in pursuit of ocean racing’s most coveted prize. The Race has led to so many developments within the sport, continually pushed the boundaries of design, and witnessed a succession of world speed and monohull distance records. No one takes the race lightly and no one tells the story better than journalists, Bob Fisher and Barry Pickthall who have been there for every race from the first in 1973. Published on the occasion of the Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta in Alicante, Sailing Legends marks the anecdotes, highlights all the major stories, and provides 21 biographies of sailing’s greatest names from the first handicap and line honour winners, Ramón Carlin and Sir Chay Blyth, to double winner Conny van Rietschoten, French legend Eric Tabarly, those great New Zealand rivals Sir Peter Blake and Grant Dalton, through to the latter day Volvo Ocean Race winners. They also detail the awesome advances in design and construction that make today’s yachts formidably tough, surfing machines capable of hitting 40+ knots and sustaining 600 mile daily runs. The book records all the yachts and every crewmember to have taken part, race results and successive records set. About the Authors: Bob Fisher and Barry Pickthall have covered every Volvo Ocean Race and Whitbread since the inaugural event in 1973. Bob Fisher is a yachting correspondent for the Guardian and Observer newspapers and is among sailing’s foremost historians with a long list of books to his name - most recently, An Absorbing Interest: the History of the America’s Cup and The Fabulous 40s. Barry Pickthall was yachting correspondent for The Times for 20 years and was Shore Manager for Conny van Rietschoten’s second victorious Whitbread campaign in 1981-82 and did the same for Eric Tabarly in the event that followed.
