The International Boatbuilding Competition runs over three, entertaining days at the Gateway Plaza, Auckland International Boat Show.

Five teams of four boatbuilders, each representing a country competing in Rugby World Cup 2011, will compete to build and race boats at the show. The teams will be made up of apprentices and boatbuilders from companies in the superyacht industry: Fitzroy Yachts, Superyacht Marine Interiors, NZ Marine Training Organisation, Superyacht Interiors NZ and Alloy Yachts.

The teams will each build two boats to similar designs. One will allow them to be an innovative as they like to vie for 'most innovative team'. Their build material may be resin-infused carbon fibre, laminated timber or aluminium – a wonderful opportunity for the public to see traditional and modern skills in action.
On Saturday, the teams will build their second boat to the standard competition design, before racing their boat under paddle, sail and outboard power. The exhibit will continue on the Sunday, including videos of the previous days and the boats which were built.

Throughout, members of NZ Marine Industry Training Organisation will at the stand to meet boat show visitors who are interested in a career in the marine industry – such as boatbuilding, boat design, electrical and engineering, or retail.

Every year NZ Marine ITO facilitates the training of between 600 and 700 apprentices across all marine sectors: naval architects and designers, boatbuilders, systems engineers, electrical and electronic installers, painters, cabinetmakers, riggers and sparmakers, sales and services. The NZ marine industry employs more than 10,000 people in approximately 1,300 companies.
