2011 Canada's Cup Competition - Day 2

'Canada’s Cup 2011'    Canada's Cup 2011
The Canada’s Cup match race sailing competition got underway today on Lake Michigan. This match race sailing competition occurs between the US and Canada. The morning started with brisk winds, which diminished over the course of the day. Team Vincere, of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club holds a 2-1 lead, after today’s three races. Racing will continue for the next two days in this best of nine racing series. The first boat to win five races will take the Canada’s Cup trophy to their home yacht club, and will host the next Canada’s Cup competition in two-four years.

In Race 1, Team Heritage of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club had a strong start. The competitors engaged in tacking duel during the first leg in classic match racing tactics. Team Heritage had a small lead at the first mark, maintaining that lead during the windward leg. After the third mark, Team Vincere chose to split tacks in hopes of gaining on Heritage, to no avail. Heritage won the first race by over a minute.

In Race 2, both boats entered the start box and engaged in a luffing duel, resulting in both boats being over the line at the start of the race. Upon crossing the start, both boats engaged in another tacking duel in the first upwind leg. Team Vincere gained advantage in the first upwind leg and led by approximately 5-6 boat length. Heritage worked hard, trying various match race tactics including splitting tacks and gybing downwind, but Team Vincere maintained their lead by protecting the favored side of the course and won race 2 by just less than a minute.

Team Vincere had a strong start in Race 3 in moderate and shifting winds. While Heritage continued to engage in match race dueling tactics, Vincere advanced their lead to win the third race by a significant margin. Team Vincere now leads the competition by a final score of two wins to one loss.

Racing will continue tomorrow at 11:00am. Both teams are looking forward to continuing the competition tomorrow in this best of nine series.

The final racing results for the series will be posted on the Canada’s Cup website http://www.canadascup2011.us/. Video clips of the event will also be available on http://www.canadascup2011.us/ .

About The Canada’s Cup
The 115-year-old Canada’s Cup is the most preeminent sailing trophy in the United States today, and shares more than looks with her better-known sister, America’s Cup. Both are named after the original racing yacht that first defended them – the Royal Canadian Yacht Club Canada won the inaugural match in 1896 on the waters of Lake Erie. Since then, 22 match races have been run with Canada winning nine and the United States winning 13. For more information about Canada’s Cup 2011, visit www.canadascup2011.us.
