CORK OCR Regatta day 5

'Cork OCR Regatta 2011'   

The CORK OCR Regatta held its fifth and final day of the of racing which experienced high winds and in turn resulted in the decision being made to keep sailors ashore for safety reasons. The regatta witnessed a multitude of conditions which tested the competitor’s skill and ability.

It was the North American Championship for the new 29erXX class. In first place was Kristen Lane and Matt Pistay of the St.Francis Yacht Club. Second place was Jen Glass and John Renehan of Seattle Yacht Club, and in third, and the top Canadian team, was Sam Gustin and Ian Woodbury of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. In the 49er class, Rob Frost and Tom Arbuckle of Brittannia Yacht Club took the gold. In second, and members of the Canadian Sailing Team, was Matt Dubreucq and Trevor Parekh of the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club. Kevin Jewett and Mike Rivlin, of LGYC, took third place.

This was an ISAF Grade 1 event for the Laser Full-rig and Laser Radial classes. In the Laser Full-rig class, Andy Maloney of Auckland, New Zealand took gold. In second was Chris Dold, of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, and a member of the Canadian Sailing Team. Clay Johnson of EYC/LEHYC placed third. In the Laser Radial females, Danielle Dube of Royal Nova Scoatia Yacht Club took the gold. Brenda Bowskill of the Royal Canadian Yacht club placed second, and Erin Rafuse, also of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Club placed third.

All three are member of the Canadian Sailing Team. In the Laser Radial open fleet, Luke Ramsay of Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, and a member of the Canadian Sailing Team currently pursuing an Olympic campaign in the 470 class, took gold. In second was Andrew McKenzie of Auckland, New Zealand, and in third was Conner Blouin of Tampa, Florida.

Lastly, this event was the Canadian Championship for the Finn class. Greg Douglas won the event, and Martin Robitaille placed second. Both sailors represent the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, and are members of the Canadian Sailing Team. In third was Gordon Lamphere of LGYC.

Congratulations to all of the sailors, and thank you to our sponsors and hard-working volunteers. Tomorrow, August 25th, marks the beginning of the CORK Offshore and One-Design Regatta with the Long Distance Race. Course racing resumes on Friday, August 26th until Sunday, August 28th.
