Audi MedCup's Region of Murcia Trophy is currently underway and despite an uphill battle, Audi Azzurra Sailing Team have obtained a satisfying fifth place in the first race in Cartagena and closed the gap on Container.
Today's light breeze meant that only one race was held on the first day of the fourth leg of the Audi MedCup circuit. Azzurra was perfectly positioned during the pre-start and appeared to have started in the lead, in reality she was a metre over the starting line and was therefore forced to restart in accordance with the rules.
It was clear from the off that this 'false start' would influence the rest of the race but the Audi Azzurra Sailing Team crew did not give up and managed to rejoin the rest of the fleet by the first windward mark thanks to some radical tactical decisions. An extraordinary final downwind leg saw them finish fifth, just a few boat lengths behind fourth-placed Audi by All4One. The race was won by Synergy followed by Bribon and Quantum. In the overall classification of the circuit so far, today's result leaves the boat that represents the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda sitting just five points behind second-placed Container, who today slid back to seventh place.
'We made an error in our evaluations at the start,' said skipper Guillermo Parada, 'our on-board computer shows that we started a metre over. It's a real pity because we sailed well and the boat responded perfectly and so we have high hopes for the rest of the week.'
Vasco Vascotto, strategist aboard Azzurra, echoed his sentiments: 'We were raring to go, a bit too much so and we paid for it, but we were in an excellent starting position. Over the course of the race we were forced to have the patience we were lacking in earlier and we performed well, we are satisfied in any case.'
