The 2011 Lark Nationals being sponsored by Allen, are now officially underway in near perfect conditions with a relatively steady F 3-4. It was a long sail out to the race area with all crews remarkably on time.
Race 1 started cleanly with Chris Whitehouse as pathfinder. A number started early including Alan Krailing, Emma Harris and Steve Hall. Coming into the mark on opposing tacks it was Krailing who rounded first. There was then a small group rounding together with Charlie Roome, Steve Hall, Nigel Hufton and Chris Whitehouse. Luffing on the second leg meant that a number were driven too high which allowed Krailing and Tinsell to extend their lead. At the gybe Jane Alexander and Rachel Rhodes who were catching the front bunch managed a capsize which was to be a costly mistake. By the end of lap one Steve Hall had pulled up to second and was chasing Krailing. Hufton managed to hold third with Roome fourth and the Hydon’s pulling up to fifth.
In the second race, the choice of start line rather than a gate start proved very challenging for the race officer. It was easy to lose count how many starts were attempted with round the end and black flags making their appearance. Eventually the race was started with the fleet mainly favouring the committee boat end. A most impressive start from John Crooks at the pin saw him well placed around the windward mark but it was Krailing again that rounded first with Steve Hall following. Will Croxford and Emma Harris made a showing with Ross Kearny, Charlie Roome, Steve Chatten and Chris Holliman all rounding well. By the second beat a tactical error by Krailing allowed Hall to slip through. Hall took line honours with Krailing second and Croxford third.
