International 420 European championships - Aussie score third race win

'Tasmanians Alec Bailey and Doug Shephard racing on day three of the European championships for the International 420'

Australian sailors Angus Galloway and Alexander Gough scored their third heat win at the European championships for the International 420 dinghy class overnight.

The Queensland crew, who represented Australia and won bronze at the ISAF youth world championships, are equal on seven points after six qualifying heats with the French crew of Guillaume Pirouelle and Valentin Sipan, who also have had three heat wins.

With the 101 boats split into two fleets, the French crew had two wins overnight, the Australians a 1-2 result. The French have discarded a sixth, the Australians a seventh.

Unfortunately, the other Australian crew, Tasmanians Alec Bailey and Doug Shephard had some bad luck on day three, but still managed respectable performances of 11th and ninth. They dropped from 11th to 15th in overall standings but have easily qualified for the gold fleet.

Conditions were again demanding, with strong winds and lumpy seas.

Doug Shephard sent this report on Facebook: 'Had a tough day today; were coming about fifth in both races, but there was a big left shift in the first race and then we blew out our kite on the last reach.

'In the second race it got really windy, gusting up to 30knots and waves about two metres high.

'We got up to fourth or fifth and then capsized and dropped to 10th but caught a boat on the last reach.

'Most boats weren’t putting their kites up at all in the last race; we put it up on the downwind run and lost it.

'We are sitting 15th overall, only three points between us and 11th placed boat; clear of the next boat by five points. Have a lay day tomorrow.

'Forecast is about 15 knots so looking forward to a bit less wind and will be in the gold fleet with about 43 boats so it will be lots harder.'

Of total fleet of 101 boats all are European crews except the two Australians and a crew from Singapore.
