NZL Sailing Team members, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke update on their progress in the 49er class and what lies ahead this week in the Olympic Test event at Weymouth, England.

We are in Weymouth for the pre-Olympics, a test regatta exactly one year before the Olympics start.

winds and warmish temperatures so far since arriving last week, has been a nice change from the cold, windy training before we left NZ … although the forecast is predicting it to be wet and windy for our first three days of our racing starting on Saturday.

We can’t wait for the event to start. It will be good to test ourselves against the other top 24 countries in the 49er class. The regatta mimics the race format and fleet sizes of the Olympic Games which is a great chance to fine-tune our performances in a competitive environment.

We have had lots of fun so far with the other guys in the NZL Team… we were based out of the Weymouth Sailing Club for our first few days training as the Olympic venue was closed for set up. While we were there the NZL team raced with the locals in their own 2-handed Squib keel boats, we also had an evening where we took their youth sailors out on our Olympic class yachts, which was awesome for them and we enjoyed it too!

Most of the 49er racing is provisionally programmed on the 'Nothe' course area. This area is very close to the cliffs and breakwater meaning great viewing from the shore but with limited space. Most of our races will be 3 or 4 laps, which will make for some intense racing.

Our 16 race series starts with three 30 minute races per day scheduled from Saturday 6th August, concluding with a Top 10 double points Medal Race on the 13th Aug 2011. Reserve days on ninth & 12th August in case of unfavorable conditions will be a new experience.
