Weymouth and Portland International Regatta day 3

'Weymouth and Portland International Regatta 2011'    USSTAG

Weymouth and Portland International Regatta has reached its third day of competition. With it being the final day of the Women’s Match Racing round robins, Sally Barkow’s Team 7 Match Race defeated the undefeated Russian team and qualified for the Quarter Finals.

Barkow, who sails with Alana O’Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) and Elizabeth Kratzig Burnham (Miami Beach, Fla.), also defeated the Spanish team, but lost out to the British and French teams to finish with a seven-four record. As one of the top eight teams, Barkow advances to the knockout round, which is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6, where she will face off against Mandy Mulder (NED).

Today was the first day of racing in Men’s and Women’s RS:X racing at the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta. Bob Willis (Chicago, Ill.) made his debut at an Olympic Test Event today and was pleased with his 20, 17 finishes for 18th overall. RS:X Women’s rep Farrah Hall (Annapolis, Md.) went 24, 25 for 24th overall.

Women’s Match Racing takes a day off tomorrow, but racing in the RS:X continues along with the first races scheduled for Laser, Radial, and Men’s and Women’s 470s. The Finn, Star and 49er classes get underway on Saturday, August 6. The medal races will run August 11-13.

Sally Barkow on the day and advancing: 'We went two and two. Against the Brits we had a solid start and it was a very close match. It all went down to the wire at the finish and we just ran out of room.'

'I got a good rest last night and I’m pretty excited to race. It’s been sunny and warm and for the most part pretty light. I woke up to 20 knots of breeze. Just kinda hanging out right now but I’m sure the nerves will kick up a bit when we’re towing out to the course. I’m a fan of big breeze as it favors my size a bit and I’m looking for another solid event and I’m looking forward to it.'

Exclusive interview with Farrah Hall: On Hall’s pre-regatta waves training: 'I spent a lot of time in San Francisco before this. I sailed outside the Golden Gate. We had some big swell and it was good training for this.'

On the day and the regatta: 'I was a little nervous, but once I get on the water it is back to normal. I have a pretty good routine down. I come in, put my gear away, get treatment, get food and go to sleep. I’m kinda fired up because the day was so different and I didn’t do as well as I wanted to do. We did have some exciting racing toward the back of the fleet. I was duking it out with some good girls and beat them.'

'I had three weeks at home and put in some time in the gym before coming here. Practice has been good. It’s given us time to test some things in the boat. Forecast looks like a mix of conditions and it will be a good way for us to test everything out. One of the interesting things about a Test Event or Olympics is that you have to adjust your schedule. We did a lot of training and we have our gym set up here at HQ. Working hard int eh gym and trying to put a few more pounds on.'

'We had a lot of work to do to get the boat ready. It’s good to have everything sorted out. You don’t want to break anything which is easy with these boats. We feel ready. We went out today and the boat is going just fine. It’s all good.'
