US Sailing launches new website for 2012 Olympic sailing teams

In the one year countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, US Sailing has launched a new website that highlights America’s sailing athletes’ journey to Weymouth, U.K., the location of the sailing competition. The new website illustrates the U.S. Team’s 'Way to Weymouth' and was created in-house at the sport’s national governing body in collaboration with the Olympic Sailing Committee with the goal of sharing the excitement of Games preparation with fans across the country.

'By offering a central online setting for Team news, athlete video profiles, action photography and regatta results, our goal is to give fans an exclusive view into how athletes train and compete in the quest for Olympic and Paralympic medals,' said Dean Brenner (Wallingford, Conn.), Chairman, Olympic Sailing Committee.

Highlights of the new website include:
• Live coverage from Olympic and Paralympic Team Selection events
• News, photo slideshows, audio and video highlights from major regattas
• Meet the Team video profiles and athlete features
• Facebook and Twitter streams
• Live reporting from Olympic and Paralympic Team Selection events
• Historical sailing reference from past Games

To showcase the new experience to fans and give everyone a look into how the new website will operate, US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics has a dedicated media team in Weymouth to cover the London 2012 Olympic Test Event this week. 'We will launch exclusive live coverage of the U.S. Team’s performance,' continued Brenner. 'We believe in sharing this unique experience with the global sailing audience and giving our fans access like never before.'

Join the Team and Watch Live: The Way to Weymouth
To kick off the new website and fully showcase its functionality, the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics communications team will host live coverage of the U.S Team competing at the London 2012 Olympic Test Event. Beginning August 3, tune in for live updates, news, photos, videos and interviews with the athletes competing through August 13 at the 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta. Bookmark the direct link for live coverage.

Throughout the year, when the athletes are in residence in Weymouth and Portland for a USSTAG Training Camp or competing in a regatta, such as the London 2102 Olympic Test Event, tune into the live webcam mounted inside the USA Compound to get a taste of what it’s like for athletes as they prep their boats or workout in the fully-equipped 24 Fitness gym. Tune into the live stream.

U.S. Olympic Team – Sailing
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Qingdao, China, Anna Tunnicliffe won a coveted gold medal entering the history books as the first American female sailor in 20 years to win gold. Zach Railey surprised the sailing world by winning a silver medal in the Finn class. Going into the regatta, he wasn’t favored to win a medal, but Railey sailed one of the best regattas of his career and proved his talent and athleticism.

Looking toward the 2012 Games, athletes will have the opportunity to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team – Sailing in the 10 events selected for the 2012 Olympic Regatta, set for July 27- August 12, 2012 based on their combined performance at two international events: Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, in Weymouth, June 6-11, 2011, and the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championship, in Perth, Australia, December 3-18, 2011. The exception is the Women’s Match Racing event, which will have two separate qualifying regattas, available to U.S. athletes only: one in Miami, Florida, October 26-30, 2011, and one in Weymouth, May 4-7, 2012

U.S. Paralympic Team – Sailing
The 2008 Paralympic Games in Qingdao, China marked an historical moment when Maureen McKinnon-Tucker and Nick Scandone won the first gold medal for the U.S. in the two-person SKUD-18. Their remarkable story of determination in the face of Scandone’s failing health defined the Games experience across all sports. John Ruf, a talented and accomplished sailor, won the singlehanded 2.4mR bronze medal in a hotly-contested fleet.

Athletes will have the opportunity to qualify in the three events selected for the 2012 Paralympic Regatta, set for August 29-September 9, 2012 in Weymouth, U.K. based on their combined performance at two international events: 2012 IFDS World Championship, in Port Charlotte, Fla., scheduled for January 8-16, 2012, and US Sailing’s 2012 Rolex Miami OCR, in Miami, Fla., scheduled for January 22-28, 2012.
