Global Ocean Race 2011-12 (GOR) is a double-handed, round the world race for Class40 yachts. The race is a total of approximately 30,000 nautical miles.
New Zealand’s father and son team of Ross and Campbell Field are running a meticulously planned campaign bolstered by an exceptional degree of experience in round-the-world racing.

By April this year, Ross and Campbell Field had identified their Class40 of choice for the GOR: the Verdier-designed Tyker 40 Desafio Cabo de Hornos, originally launched at FR Nautisme, France, in 2008 and raced in the 2008-09 GOR by the Chilean duo of Felipe Cubillos and Jose Muñoz. One immediate obstacle was the yacht’s location – the resort town of Algarrobo, Chile. Campbell Field flew to Chile in March to prepare the yacht for shipment to Europe following almost a year of planning and secrecy. During the first week in May, following their announcement of participation in the GOR, their Class40 arrived in Lymington, Hampshire on the UK’s South Coast after a journey via ship from Chile to Rotterdam via the Panama Canal.

A very rapid and thorough refit at Lymington’s Berthon Boatyard began immediately and during the first week in June, the yacht, renamed Hupane - meaning ‘step upwards’ from the Maori phrase included in the traditional Haka display made famous by the All Blacks rugby team – successfully completed the GOR’s 180 degree inversion test setting an impressive Class40 record for self-righting at just six minutes. Barely pausing for breath, the Fields were soon out test sailing and have completed double-handed, overnight test sails in the English Channel.
Their first competitive event will be the Rolex Fastnet Race on Sunday 14 August, raced with five crew when they will be lining-up against a large fleet of Class40’s to measure their performance against the fleet. Within days of finishing the Rolex Fastnet Race the Fields will depart the UK and sail directly to Palma to rendezvous with the rest of the Global Ocean Race fleet.
