Laser 4.7 Worlds - It's all about the shifts
|
Laser 4.7 World Championships, St Francis Yacht Club, CA, USA commenced July 28 and will conclude August 2. Friday evening and day two of the Laser 4.7 Worlds is a wrap. Yesterday, the dock talk among the competitors was current, today, it is the shifts. The St. Francis Yacht Club Race Committee is alternating the girls and boys fleets, 165 competitors in total, on a daily basis. Today they started the two boys fleets at 1100 this morning, and the girls fleet at 1500. This morning was overcast with increased wind from yesterday, ranging from 15-22 knots, and shifty. Three of the boys representing Spain, Francisco Gonzalez, Juan Kevin Cabrera Gonzalez and Carlos Rosello are now in first, third and fifth, respectively, making them a team to be reckoned with. Carlos Rosello, who won the first race today, said he actually had a better start in the second race, saw a huge right shift, but because it lifted the boats to windward of him, he could not tack for it and rounded the top mark deep in the fleet. He managed to eke his way back to 19th in that race. In race one, Rosello said he led almost the entire race, but got passed by two boats on his way to the finish line. 'I couldn’t believe it,' he said, laughing. 'But I found a wind cone and was able to get by,' and finish in first. Turkish team member Mehmet Turkmen won the second race today, and was ecstatic at his results. How does he read the shifts? 'I feel it,' Turkmen said. It took four starts to get the girls two races off today. PRO Bruce Greene said that the competitors like to crowd the boat end of the line in order to get the long starboard tack toward the beach and as a result, he said he’s favored the pin end more than he normally would. Ultimately, Green said they had to fly the black flag to get the racers starting properly. Italian sailor Cecilia Zorzi blazed through the fleet today with two bullets, taking her to the top of the leader board. An observer watched her surf downwind against the ebb tide, which initially seemed counter-intuitive, until she started passing all of her competition. To that she said, 'if you have good speed in the big wind, the tide doesn’t stop you.'
