RS Feva World Championship Day 2 - Dancing on the Foredeck

'RS Feva World Championship 2011'    RS Feva

RS Feva World Championship is being held in Bruinisse, Netherlands between 22nd and 29th July 2011.

It was chalk and cheese between day one in Q series and day two. Only two races were required for a full qualification series. Approx 10kts hit the deck with a 30 degree shift predicted at some point. The shift happened during the final race which was abandoned due to fleet inversion tendencies. That was when the magic happened.

With what is undoubtedly the greatest idea ever in sailing circles one of the organisers turned up on the race course with his house boat. It looks like a house on a barge. Only in Holland. It then gets better because he rigged it with a disco system. At the very point of abandonment he swung the disco into operation and the fleet gathered around him and there was dancing on foredecks – literally! As soon as the committee were ready to go back into sequence he turned it off and departed to set up as the DJ boat for the Nations Cup that evening! Awesome entertainment and everyone the author spoke to thought this should be compulsory for all major events!

Sailing wise the usual suspects were still there but this time with the lighter condition experts to the fore as well. Whilst the leader board is jammed with Brits at the moment the fast Italians and Swedes showed they would make their presence felt. Once the fleet has been split into Gold Silver Bronze the results will be recalculated to only include the results of Gold fleet sailors in the gold fleet etc.

Leading the charge into the final series are Owen Bowerman/Charlie Darling two points clear of Matt Whitfield/Scott Wallis (That rings a bell doesn’t it? Reverse of the Nationals earlier this year!). Rob Baddeley/James Taylor were steady with a 3-2 ahead of the marginally more erratic (relative term of course) Morgan Peach/Herbie Harford who pinged in a bullet and a seventh. Top 10 rounded off by Rob/Emma Loveridge, Seb Baucutt/Harry Buisseret, Jovian Short/James Barlow, Matteo Pilati/Mattia Ducchi (ITA), Emil Andersson/Dennis Fonseca Farlsson (SWE) and Rob/Alice Masterman.

It’s still way too early to start celebrating yet as the top 10 are covered by 14 points.

The Nations Cup was a spectacular success in the harbour during the evening with commentary from the water, BBQ, volleyball etc all going on as well. Winner of the Nations Cup were the Italians with Britain second and Hong Kong third. All the nations cup boats were decked out with special kites each with their own flag in the middle. A draw was held for one of the kites from amongst those who had ordered clothing on-line. The lucky winners were (I believe) Tomas and Mads Mathisen from Norway.
