Lark Open Meeting at Exe SC

'Lark Open Meeting'

Lark Open Meeting was held at Exe Sailing Club, Devon over the weekend of 23rd and 24th July 2011.

Seventeen boats braved the July end of term M5 rush in what was the last opportunity for some last minute practice before the Nationals at Abersoch. Remarkably the roads proved clear and the forecast true with winds between 7 and 11 knots. Exe sailing club ran the two day event with only one recall and no black flags!

Saturday saw race one underway with Stuart and Nick Hydon diving off to the right hand side of course with Jane Alexander and Rachael Rhodes following. By the windward mark both opened up a convincing lead which was to prove unstoppable. Peter Gray and Simon Forbes in a borrowed boat came in third.

Race two saw Steve Chatten and Matt Thomas emerge first at the windward mark with the Hydons second. Chatten managed to power away on the tight three sail reach. Chatten seemed to have the race sewn up, but a tactical slip allowed Hydon in by the smallest of margins on the line. Peter Gray managed a third after working his way through the fleet.

It was Chris Holliman and Kate Hutchins who led the third race with Charlie Roome, Alan Krailing and Emma Harris well up around the first mark. As the race progressed Roome managed take the lead with Krailing in second and Holliman in third.

Going into Sunday the results were scattered with only Hydon and Gray showing any consistency.

The first race on Sunday saw Chris Whithouse take the lead with Hydon and Nigel Hufton chasing. On the penultimate leg a wind change came in which benefited the Hydons allowing them past Whitehouse. Hufton slipped back after Krailing sailed over the top. The race was won by Hydon followed by Whitehouse and Krailing battling for the line.

The final race saw Emma Harris and Ellie Bremmer round first with Gray second and Alexander third. By the second beat a wind shift allowed Hydon through to second and Nigel Hufton third. The race became processional with Harris taking the win.

The Hydon’s took the event with only two points separating places third to sixth.

Thanks goes to Exe Sailing Club for putting on a well run event that kept to schedule and great hospitality on shore.
