New Zealand's Sam Meech leads the Laser Standard Youth World Championships being sailed at in La Rochelle, France.
There was a perfect sailing day on Friday, with a NW breeze of 12-14 knots increasing later during the afternoon to 18-20 knots. The sun was out most of the time.
The event is being held concurrently with the World Youth Radial Championships, ahead of the World Laser Championships which start next week.
Of the ten races sailed to date, Meech has won seven, and has placed second in the other three. Surprisingly the points margin between himself and the second placed competitor overall is not great, and the overall win is not yet assured, for the New Zealand sailor, who is a regular competitor on the Senior tour for the Mens Olympic Singlehander.
Two races were run today for both fleets.
The leaders in the Standard Youth gold fleet after 10 races and one discard are:
1. Meech Sam, NZL
2. Mills-Burton Alex, GBR
3. Evans Martin, GBR
The leaders in the Radial gold fleet after 9 races and one discard as well are:
1. Rudawski Marcin, POL
2. Burman James, AUS
3. Brown Tristan, AUS
