RS Feva Allen and Magic Marine Worlds 2011 preview

'RS Feva World Championships 2011'    RS Class Association

The RS Feva Allen & Magic Marine Worlds 2011 will soon be underway. The event is slated as possibly being the largest doublehanded, single class, dinghy event in the world this year.

Certainly with 158 boats expected it isn’t a small event. The RS Feva Worlds 2011 are lucky to have such magnificent sponsors as Allen & Magic Marine on board to enable this to happen. Allen, the performance sailing boat fittings people, have been with us for three years now and are worth their weight in Gold!

Bruinisse, in Holland, is already filling up. Over 60 boats had already arrived by Thursday evening. Registrations will peak on Friday with some last minute Johnnies arriving on Saturday (that includes at least one boat hotfooting it across Europe from the 29er Europeans where there are only marginally fewer boats than at Bruinisse.) The race area will be open for practice starts on Saturday afternoon.

By race time on Sunday there will be boats from 13 countries and three continents making up the six flights. Each flight will be easily identifiable as all sailors in a given flight will be wearing the same colour tank tops over their buoyancy aids as supplied by our other great sponsor – Magic Marine. The current plan is for there to be five qualifying races in each flight races each other flight once. On Tuesday everybody will be sorted into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets for the final three days completing a further nine races. Prize giving is scheduled for Thursday evening.

The social plan has several significant elements to it and the main one is planned for Monday evening after normal racing. Each country gets to pick one deserving boat (ie preferably not their hotshots) and will be issued with a new country coloured kite. Those boats will then race around a very tight, stadium style course inside the marina. We are expecting a noisy crowd for that one. Slightly more normally the competitors also have a ‘prom’ night with a sit down meal. Dress code is Feva colours! For the non sailors there will be model clog boat making and racing! Apparently they have a full set of rules for this hours of entertainment. Well done the Dutch organising Committee.

The organising club is the ancient and venerable Royal Maas yacht club who are celebrating their 160th anniversary this year. We only need two more boats for a very happy coincidence! They and the local team at Aquavitesse have done a superb job in getting this all set up. Together with a host of smaller local sponsors and the two key ones Allen & Magic Marine the show is now well and truly on the road and all that remains is for the action to commence.

Who will be top dogs this year? Hard to tell. You have always got to fancy the Brits but the Italians look as if they have a number of very strong sailors as well. The Dutch will fancy a crack at the titles by some of their stars on home waters (one of them has this lake as their home waters – all be it nearly 20 kms further down it! The Irish were super competitive last year but a very large number moved on leaving the waters clear for the next generation so they will eager to check progress too. We welcome for the first time teams from Australia, Hong Kong, Spain and Estonia in addition to the normal suspects! As the saying goes – let the games commence!
