Laser Standard Junior World Championship 2011 – Australians in top 11

'Competitors cope with the heavy swell off La Rochelle - Laser Standard Junior World Championship 2011'    Christophe Breschi / ricochets17

Laser Standard Junior World Championship 2011 is being held in La Rochelle, France from 16th to 23rd July.

Australians Raphael Sulkowski and Luke Elliott are in the top 11 placings overall in the Laser Standard Junior World Championships.

The huge fleet is currently sailing in divisions, with competitors alternating, to determine the gold, silver and bronze fleets for the finals. Conditions have been demanding for the young sailors, with 20 knot winds, gusting to 30 knots, on a three metre swell.

For many, this is their first international regatta in their transition to the big rigs of Olympic status.

Sulkowski is seventh overall with a third and a fourth on day two, following a third and a 14th on the opening day.

Elliott is 11th overall, following his first day 2-11 placings with a consistent 6-5 result on day two.

The other two Australians competing at La Rochelle, Tasmanian George Jones and Elliott Noye, both had improved results on day two, but are well down in the overall standings.

Jones’ placings so far have been 31-32-15-29 to be 87th overall while Noye is in 101st place with a scorecard of 38-34-32-22.

Heading the standings after four qualifying races are New Zealander Sam Meech and two British sailors, Martin Evans and Alex Mills-Barton, each of them on four points after discarding one race and each having notched up two wins in different divisions.

Mills-Barton’s drop race is BFD, one of 21 competitors black-flagged on day two as race officials of the Société des Regates Rochelaises dealt with general recalls in the rough conditions.

The Laser Standard Rig World Championship has attracted 147 entries from 35 nations and will be followed by the Laser Radial world championships.
