Australian youth sailors Josh Franklin and Lewis Brake have raced up the 29er class leader board on day five of the 2011 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Croatia, moving from fifth to second overall.
The Queensland based sailors had a strong day on the water in Zadar, finishing second in both of the day’s races in the light conditions to be 12 points off the lead with two days of racing remaining.
Franklin and Brake will have to push the whole way to the end of the regatta with the third placed American team currently tied on points and the fourth placed Dutch crew just two points further back.
'Today was a really good day for Josh and I,' said Brake. 'We stayed out of trouble moving us up the ladder to equal second position which was great.
'Tomorrow’s racing will be tough and almost cement the final outcome and we’re looking forward to the challenge,' he said.
Australian Youth Sailing Team head coach Belinda Stowell was impressed with the pair’s performance on Wednesday.
'Josh and Lewis sailed really well today, they protected their position in the fleet and sailed smart all day,' said Stowell.
'It was a long day for all of the crews as the breeze didn’t come in until very late meaning that some classes didn’t hit the water until 4pm and were still out there at 8pm,' she said. 'On the plus side we finally recorded a breeze of double figures with the hot southerly getting up to 11 knots at one stage today.
'We’ve got two races planned for tomorrow and then one on the final day so there’s still plenty of racing for all of the crews,' said Stowell.
In the 420 boys class Angus Galloway and Alex Gough are sitting third overall after a mixed day on the water resulted in a fifth, a 22nd and a 14th.
Galloway and Gough are in a tight battle for the final place on the podium with the fourth placed French team tied on points while the Argentinean crew is a point further back in fifth.
In the 420 girls class Australians Carrie Smith and Ella Clark have maintained their fifth position with a 13th and a seventh in the day’s two races.
Eamon Robertshaw has continued his march up the ladder in the RS:X boys class with a 10th and a fifth moving him up three positions to fifth overall.
In the multihull open class Sydney’s Paul Darmanin and Adelaide’s Aleks Vucic finished with a fifth and an 11th aboard their Sirena SL16 to be eighth overall.
Annalise Gilbert is 18th in the RS:X girls class following an 18th and a 16th on Wednesday.
In the Laser Radial boys class Matthew Wearn is 28th after a strong 10th in race one, before not finishing race two.
Ashley Stoddart is 38th in the Laser Radial girls class, crossing the line in 22nd and 33rd on day five.
Racing continues in Croatia on Thursday with the 2011 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship finishing on Friday, July 15.
