After a dual with the largest privately owned yacht in the world, Maltese Falcon, in the ‘Open Division’, the Lamborghini-orange multihull Gunboat 66, Phaedo, crossed the finish line at The Lizard, Cornwall in light air this morning at 10.11.
After 12.5 days at sea, Phaedo were fourth across the line and are first in their class. The crew are jubilant, tired, salty and in dire need of a pint, but will stay on the boat until they reach Ocean Village in Southampton by tomorrow morning.
Onboard is 31 year old owner Lloyd Thornburg, captain Paul Hand and crew: Nick Crespi, Jeff Condell, Marc Lagesse, Brain Sharpe, Sam Basson, Simon Eatwell.
'It has been an epic adventure,' said Thornburg of the race via satellite phone. 'We enjoyed the RORC Caribbean 600 so much and it [the Transatlantic Race 2011] just seemed like the next step. During the windy part of this race, we were screaming along in big seas. That was pretty exciting and sometimes hair-raising, especially when flying a hull at night!
