ISAF Youth Sailing Worlds - Five Australian crews in top ten
|
A the 2011 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships, five Australian crews ended day one in the top 10 of their classes. Light winds in Zadar, Croatia, tested all of the crews at the world’s most prestigious youth sailing regatta. Australia’s 420 boys and girls, RS:X boys, multihull and 29er crews are all currently in the top 10. The Australian Youth Sailing Team’s 420 boys crew of Angus Galloway and Alex Gough ended day one fifth overall, starting their regatta with a 15th before bouncing back well with a second place position in race two. Fellow 420 sailors Carrie Smith and Ella Clark are currently fourth in the girls class after crossing the line fourth in the opening race. The light, shifty, breeze restricted the 420 girls class to just one race on the opening day. 29er sailors Josh Franklin and Lewis Brake are currently in fourth following a fifth and an eighth in the first two races. The Queensland pair headed into this event off the back of their most impressive performance together, victory at Kieler Woche in Germany. Paul Darmanin and Aleks Vucic are seventh in the multihull open class, being raced in Croatia in the Sirena SL16. Darmanin, from Sydney, and Vucic, from Adelaide, had a 10th and a fourth in their first major international regatta together. Eamon Robertshaw ended day one of his second straight ISAF Sailing World Championship in seventh overall, following a seventh in the one and only race of the day. 'Today was a long day for all of the crews with the light thermal breezes making it a tricky day for many,' said Australian head coach Belinda Stowell. 'All of the Australian sailors are happy that the event has finally started and are enjoying playing the game. 'Even though it was a tricky day many managed to get some good scores on the board to start their regatta,' she said. Sydney sailor Annalise Gilbert is 16th in the RS:X girls class, finishing in the same position in the only race of the day. Matthew Wearn is 37th in the Laser Radial boys class after a 37th and a 27th on day one. In the Laser Radial girls class Ashley Stoddart finished 41st in the only race of the day in the light conditions to be in the same position overall. Racing continues in Croatia on Sunday and continues until Friday 15 July. Australian Youth Sailing Team here Full results available here
