Stena Match Cup Sweden 2011 – Team Maclaren second placed

Stena Match Cup Sweden 2011 is the fifth stage of the World Matching Racing Tour. Racing takes place from 4 to 10 July.

Anna Tunnicliffe recaps the day's events.

We ended up second overall at the 2011 Stena Womens Match Cup. It was a very close battle right down to the end, but Claire Leroy and team from France pulled off the overall victory.

I apologize for the delay in the blog, but this is the first opportunity I have had to sit and write it.

It was a long day of waiting around yesterday for the finals of our event. The open event started yesterday morning and due to the lack of wind, they extended their time limits for racing which resulted in all of the racing being pushed back. We eventually pushed off from the dock around 4pm and got racing at about 4:30pm. We got two raced off quite quickly with each of us taking a race win to tie the series 1-1.

In the first race, we led at the top mark, but struggled on the downwind and got passed, before taking back the lead up the second beat. In the final yards to the finish line, we made a wrong move and Claire was able to roll over the top of us and take the win.

In the second race, Claire earned a penalty near the top of the course. Around the bottom mark, we had spinnaker halyard issues and were slow in getting the kite down which allowed Claire to sail around us. Upwind we kept it close enough so that on the final downwind leg, she didn't have enough of a gap to spin her penalty and still win. So instead she had to try and draw us in to burn it (neutralize it by getting a penalty on us). We did a good job of countering her moves and were able to roll her at the finish to tie the score.

And then the wind died. We sat for an extremely long time waiting for anything to fill in. There was one last gasp that came around 7:15pm so we started racing. The breeze was light at the start and practically non-existent by the finish. We had a good even start and got a penalty on her up the first beat for tacking too close. We led around the top mark but were passed half way down to the leeward mark in the ever-dying breeze.

Up the second beat she tried to take her penalty but in doing so we had to avoid her so earned another penalty. The umpires ruled it a red penalty meaning she had to spin it immediately which put her behind us, but not by a lot. By the top mark we had a three length lead and we had about 1.5kts of breeze. We gybe set and she followed. We sailed for a couple minutes and thought if we gybed back, she won't be able to get the roll and we would be good to the finish. As it turned out, she was able to get the roll and got in front of us. This wasn't so bad because now we were set up to return the favour on the next gybe, but unfortunately, the wind started to swing to the right hand side of the course and although we got the roll back on the next gybe, it did us no good because we were sailing away from the finish line. On the subsequent gybe back towards the finish, we attempted the roll but couldn't get it, and Claire went on to win the race and the series.

It was a disappointing loss but we sailed three very good races so we are happy with that. You can check the results at the regatta website.

Now we have a couple weeks off before we head to Weymouth at the end of the month for more training.

Anna
