Kiwi SKUD 18 Team Report from IFDS Worlds Day 3 and 4
|
The NZ SKUD 18 team report from the IFDS Worlds In Weymouth, England: Day 3 arrived with a little more breeze which we welcomed. Race 1: Got under way on time at 11am and we did not get the best of starts. At the top mark we had pulled a few places back to round the mark in 10th. During the race we lost one place and had a close finish about 4 seconds behind one of the Australian boats to finish 11th. Race 2 - we got a great start but made a couple of tactical mistakes on the first beat. At the top mark we were in 13th. We picked up four places in the two downwind legs and a further place in the driving rain on the last beat. We had another photo finish and ended up about 1 second behind the other boat. We arrived back at the dock soaking wet but pleased with our improved sailing. In one day we had jumped up 3 places on the nations’ leader board. Day 4: We had a lot more wind (18 – 20 knots). Race 1 - we got the best start we have had and at one point on the first beat we were in second place. We rounded the top mark in fourth as the two American boats just sneaked around ahead of us. We battled with the two Americans and the current Regatta leader Great Britain for the rest of the race and came very close to beating GBR to finish in fourth. Race 2 - an average start but we fought hard and managed to round the first mark in fourth place. We had a battle staying in front of the leading Australian crew and managed to hold them out to finish in fourth. We have finally hit our straps and are now just 4 points behind the Canadians. Tomorrow the forecast is for up to 29 knots so it looks like we may not get on the water. The last day of racing is Friday so fingers crossed we can do enough to jump up a few more places.
