RS100 Euro Grand Prix at Gravedona, Lake Como - Day 3

'rs100s in action'    RS Sailing

RS100 Euro Grand Prix 2011 was held in Gravedona on Lake Como, Italy between 2nd and 4th July.

The final day of the RS100 Euro Grand Prix started with a bang. Not as the wind was in, but from the regatta meal the evening before, which saw the competitors have a lovely dinner accompanied by many bottles of vino rosso. Following this Gravedona town was subject to some amazing events (we thought we should give something back). Bar Centrale was holding karaoke, so of course Tom (Gorringe) Jones was first up. This truly was a Kodak moment as it was awful and brilliant at the same time, drawing in passers from the street and even the local Polizia. Following this team GBR entertained with numerous songs.

Race seven started with a fairly even line and boats spread the length of it and getting fair starts. With the wind at its standard 12-15kts, a little chop and a sunny 28 degrees it made for an even beat, with places changing all the way to the top. At the first mark it was Childs from Vaughan and Gorringe. Downwind Childs extended enough to mean that he led to the finish. Vaughan and Gorringe battled all the way around the course, with Vaughan taking second on the line.

Race eight began with a bit more of a pin bias. Unfortunately Gorringe couldn’t quite make the pin end and at the start was seen reversing skilfully around it. Despite this start Gorringe in ‘Delilah’ shot out on port to the right of the course, where he was going through the water like a salmon on steroids and half way up the beat was in the lead! Gorringe led at the windward mark, only to be overhauled by Childs as he got his kite twisted on a gybe. Vaughan was third, followed by Cunningham, Chipperfield and Rotach in hot pursuit. Unfortunately for Vaughan he went for a dip at the leeward mark which let Cunningham claim third, after a tussle with Chipperfield to take supremacy in the 8.4 class.

Race nine was the final push and with Childs one race away from the clean sweep! Nerves may have got the better of him, as after completely stuffing up the pre start, resulting in turns. When the gun went to go, Childs could be seen upside down below the line.

With Vaughan sailing in, due to blowing up a block in the previous race Gorringe was off. He sailed the perfect race to lead from start o finish. Chipperfield and Cunningham were involved in some match racing, which saw both sailors over stand the windward mark by miles. Childs working hard managed to climb through the boats and finished second, followed by Chipperfield and then Cunningham.

After a truly epic three days of sailing the sailors were awarded with a brilliant prize giving. Although Childs did his best to knock over the wine that the RS100 class gave to the club for hosting a great event. Many thanks must be given to Gravedona SC who did a brilliant job on the water and made us feel very welcome off it as well.
