RS100 Euro Grand Prix at Gravedona, Lake Como - Day 2

RS100 Euro Grand Prix 2011 is being held in Gravedona, Lake Como, Italy between 2nd and 4th July.

Another glorious day here on Lake Como was started by a very slow drift to the start line. Half way there it was looking like it would be a long day with little breeze. However as soon as the keen RS100 sailors made it to the start line the wind appeared, blowing about 12 knots.

Andrew Beynon took the job of setting the pace for the first lap of race four, with Paul Childs hot on his heels biding his time to pounce. David Gorringe was lurking in the background ready to punish any mistake by either Beynon or Childs. The breeze increased up the second beat which saw Childs manage to squeeze through into first. Childs held to the finish with Beynon second and Gorringe never out of contention.

Race five started with another pin biased line, which Childs spotted and flew across the line on port at the gun to then head left into where the breeze looked strong. Half way up the beat with Childs and Sam Vaughan out left saw a right hand shift, which for a moment made it look like Giles Chipperfield, Marcello Brioschi and Michel Rotach would be miles ahead at the first mark. To the Delight of Childs and Vaughan Chipperfield was heading to the 49ers mark and overstood, meaning that Childs led Chipperfield and then Vaughan around the windward mark. After this Childs extended on the run as Chipperfield and Vaughan battled it out for second. Little did they know Gorringe was making a charge for them and timed it to perfection down the final run to snatch second with Chipperfield third and Vaughan fourth. There was the smallest of margins at the finish, with three seconds separating the three boats and only five further seconds before Rotach finished.

Coming into the final race, heads were getting warm, legs beginning to ache but the hunger to take the final bullet of the day was still burning.

Another pin biased start saw Childs attempt another audacious port flyer to be stopped by a rampant Dave Gorringe, who stormed across the pin on starboard. Fortunately Childs had enough room to cross the line and thundered out on port to the middle of the course. Vaughan silently worked the left of the beat and at the windward mark it was Childs from Gorringe and Vaughan.

This was the start of an almighty battle, the likes of which may never have been seen on the RS100 racecourse before. This battle of the really-heavy weights that would rival Tyson vs Lewis and certainly put David Hayes performance last night to shame. (Apparently it wasn’t great…) Two further punishing laps continued. (To the distress of my legs!!) and places changed frequently. However it was Childs to lead at the last windward mark after a tight rounding with Vaughan. Childs managed to hold the lead to the finish (just) and Gorringe thundered down the final run, like a man possessed to take second, leaving Vaughan livid that he had dropped a place at the dying moments!

There is now one discard in place and the places are so tight that anything could still happen!! Three races are scheduled to take place tomorrow and if they are all completed we will have two discards, it is shaping up to be a very close finish, with all of the places still undecided!!

Tonight will see the regatta dinner (Which smells amazing) at the club. I am sure many bottles of vino will be finished off and there may be some sore heads tomorrow!
