Sail-World.com : RS100 Eurocup 2011 day 1

RS100 Euro GP 2011 got underway at Gravedona, Lake Como, after a very successful day of training the previous day. As seams customary at Gravedona the sailors arose to beautiful sunshine but very little wind. This was not a problem as we were guaranteed a southerly breeze filling in at 1 o’clock. We were certainly not disappointed. 1 o’clock came and boom - 15 knots from the South. Perfect! Race one started with pin bias, where Paul Childs took the pin and lead away up the first beat being chased by Chris Cunningham, Dave Gorringe and Sam Vaughan. The pack chasing Childs hard fought all the way around the course, but were not able to close down Childs, who took first blood from Cunningham with Vaughan finishing fast in third. Race two started with an even line which saw Giles Chipperfield pounce off the line, unfortunately for him he forgot that he needed to have his tiller extension in his hand and performed a pirouette on the line. Vaughan had a poor start and headed out right, working his boat like his life depended on it. Childs, Gorring and Andrew Beynon fought hard off the line heading left up the first beat only to be gazumped by Vaughan, cruising in on the Starboard Layline. Over the next two laps it all went off!! Beynon went for a swim, Childs had a storming run and Gorring lurked behind waiting for any mistake. Vaughan led all the way until 10 metres from the finish line, where a poorly timed gybe allowed Childs to gratefully take the bullet with Gorringe firing in third. The final race of the day saw some tired sailors making their final push for line honours. The line was heavily biased to port, which went somewhat unnoticed except for Childs who hammered the pin, taking a port flyer and building an unassailable lead up the first beat. Starting strongly was Chipperfield and Beynon, who raced hard up the beat with the constant Vaughan sneaking ahead of Cunningham at the windward mark. Chipperfield got in trouble at the bottom mark and decided the 28 degrees was too much for him, so went swimming, allowing Vaughan to take second with Beynon taking third. After truly glamorous conditions and tight racing the fleet are sat around with their beer (While I write this….) eagerly anticipating another lovely Italian dinner and racing tomorrow. We truly are LTD! Results:
