Scottish RS200 Circuit 2011 round four, sponsored by Jpwatersports (RS Scottish dealer), was hosted at Largo Bay SC on the 25th and 26th of June.

The forecast was for light to medium winds and the chance of rain. However the East Neuk of Fife famous for its local microclimate of little rain lived up to its reputation. Unfortunately though with the lack of rain and there being not quite enough heat to generate a thermal breeze the racing was mostly held in light and fickle breezes.

In most of the races massive wind shifts more reminiscent of sailing on Scottish lochs with high sided mountains resulted in some interesting racing for race one and two. The race officer and his team did an excellent job of getting four races in over the weekend. Race three and four provided some excellent light conditions where sailors had the chance to stretch their legs after sitting uncomfortably inside the boats.

Saturday and sailors were sensibly held ashore whilst the wind swung from gradient to thermal clocking through 120 degrees. Finally one race was held. The 200’s sailed through the fleet of Laser Radials by the end of the second lap. The radials and full rigs added a element of interest to the racing, particularly at the windward mark where the 200’s sailing w/w l/w courses regularly had to sail the long way round the lasers doing there triangle!

The downwind gate avoidance provided another interesting tactical feature, of strategically all or nothing. This provided the undoing of eventual second place overall 1167 (Millers) that went hard right on the last downwind leg. There was a large band of breeze, which evaporated leaving him fighting a sea of jellyfish and eventually finishing further down the pecking order than they are used to.

The jellyfish were providing a source of entertainment to crew of 1254. So much so that one jelly fish ended up in a 420 competitors shoe in the changing room, another on a laser sailors (and coach of crew’s) head whilst on the water and of course inside 1254.

All the competitors enjoyed an excellent social with the host club putting on a great BBQ.

Sunday and the driftathon continued in race two. 1167 superior weight resulted in their momentum carrying them through to first with the McKinnon’s sailing well to take second from 1254. 1254 were discussing the merits of waking up with shaving cream and eyebrows intact throughout the race much to the amusement of fellow competitors.

Races three and four provided sailors with some excellent sailing with the wind finally settling in. 1254 did their best to take the port end of the line to the w/w mark in the last race, but eventually went on to win after doing turns and went on to take first overall. 1167 took second from the Faulkner’s.

Thanks must be paid to Largo Bay SC who hosted an excellent event. The 200s look forward to returning there in the future.

Next up is Derwent Reservoir on 16th and 17th July, which is going to be an excellent competitive event with guaranteed high turnout and huge social event. This will be followed by Royal Forth, a one day event on the 30th. To be in with a chance of winning a brand new sail you have to be in it to win it!
