GP14 Open Meeting at Leigh on Sea SC

'GP14 Open Meeting 2011 at Leigh On Sea'    (c) www.marineimages.co.uk

The GP14 Open Meeting got underway at Leigh on Sea with nine GP14s that arrived on Saturday 18th June. The fleet was welcomed by the usual spread of mud as the tide slowly came in to allow racing to take place.

As boats rigged, the breezes were a steady F5 however, while the briefing was taking place, a squall blew along the river leaving some crews wondering about the conditions. When it came time to launch, the wind had eased slightly but, just in time for the first start, a steady 24 knots was being recorded by the committee boat.

Just after the first start two boats retired as the conditions were too much, the remaining seven boats carried on with Mark Wolf leading the first round from Steve Corbet. A loose shackle stopped Steve Corbet letting James Ward through to second with Colin Walker taking the third place after three rounds – unusually for the GP fleet spinnakers stayed firmly in the boat!!!

After a short break six boats made the start, the clouds were gathering and by the time the fleet were on the second reach day turned to night, visibility reduced to about 50m and the wind hit 35knts with thunder lightening heavy rain and horizontal hail – was this ‘flaming June!!’. Mark Wolf and James Ward were first and second with Steve Browne third at the end of the three round survival course.

Then there were five for the last race – the sun came out and the wind reduced to a manageable 22 knots, allowing those who had rigged their boats correctly to fly spinnakers down the run.

Mark Wolf lead the fleet round passing the spinnaker less Steve Browne with James Ward third.
