Scorpion Training and Open Meeting at Pennine SC

'Scorpion at Speed'    Pennine SC

Scorpion Training and Open Meeting was held at Pennine SC over the weekend of 11th and 12th June. 17 scorpions attended the event.

Saturday saw a free class training day with a three race open meeting on the Sunday. Everyone was optimistic for a beautiful summers day but instead the competitors experienced freezing cold and persistent rain. Fortunately there was a nice force three with some bigger gusts to liven up the reaches.

Race one and first out of the blocks were Tom Jeffcoate and Simon Hibbert pursued by current National Champions Dave Wade and Ben Rayner and Steve Walker and Chris Muxworthy in third. Tom and Simon pulled out a small cushion and then maintained it over Dave and Ben for the rest of the race but the real fight was for third. By the end Andy Mckee and Tarren Jones had pulled through ahead of Nigel Potter and Jerry Hannabuss.

Race two saw Andy and Tarren reach the windward mark first and quickly pull out a sizeable gap courtesy of some big gusts down the first set of reaches. Behind them Steve and Chris, Dave and Ben, Nigel and Jerry and Tom and Simon were involved in a close fight for second. Steve and Chris took themselves out of the reckoning with a spectacular wipeout. They weren't the only ones as various other teams also went swimming including Nigel and Jerry. This left Dave and Ben and Tom and Simon to try to reel in Andy and Tarren, something they managed courtesy of a huge gust which saw the two of them flat out while Andy and Tarren sat in a hole in front. Dave and Ben managed to sneak through at the gybe mark and went on to take the win from Andy and Tarren with Tom and Simon in third.

This meant a three way fight for overall glory going in to the last race. A bad start for Andy and Tarren looked to have ended their chances although they would later pull through to fourth. Up front it was again Dave and Ben leading from Tom and Simon with Jack Banks and Penny Jeffcoate in third. Dave and Ben pulled out a small lead but not enough as a vicious gust flattened them on one of the reaches. Tom and Simon took over the lead and went on to take the win and the event. A close fight for second ensued between Jack and Penny and Dave and Ben but Jack and Penny's resistance was ended by spinnaker problems on the last lap.

Overall Tom and Simon won from Dave and Ben and Andy and Tarren. third in the last race was enough for Jack and Penny to take fourth overall ahead of Nigel and Jerry. Pete Crowther and Dave Thompson finished top home boat in sixth. A big thanks to everyone at Pennine for a good weekend and especially thank you to the race team and safety boat team who sat out in miserable conditions to run the racing.
