Skandia Sail for Gold 2011: Skud-18, Sonar and 2.4m

Skandia Sail for Gold 2011 has resulted in a Sonar class gold medal victory for John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas (GBR). They have now become the Sonar ISAF Sailing World Cup Champions. After the Sonar was sailed at three ISAF Sailing World Cup Regattas, the British finished even on 57 points in the Standings with Bruno Jourdren, Eric Flageul and Nicolas Vimont Vicary.

The Sonar will not sail at Kieler-Woche, the final ISAF Sailing World Cup Regatta, therefore the final Standings were decided in Weymouth. With consistent performances throughout the week in Weymouth, that saw the Robertson and his crew claim four bullets, they finished three points clear of Udo Hessels, Marcel Van Veen and Mischa Rossen (NED) and the French team who were tied on 31 points each. Hessels claimed the silver medal at Skandia Sail for Gold due to two bullets he picked up in Race 3 and 6 whereas Jourdren did not win a single race. Therefore Jourdren missed out on the elusive second place that would have seen them defeat their British rivals in the Standings by one point. In the Skud-18 Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch (AUS) won the gold medal at Skandia Sail for Gold. But claiming the Skud-18 ISAF Sailing World Cup title is Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell (GBR). The British duo picked up the silver medal in Weymouth. And in the 2.4mR, Thierry Schmitter (NED) has extended his lead over Megan Pascoe (GBR) to eight points in the Sailing World Cup Standings after he picked up the bronze medal in Weymouth. With one regatta left Pascoe is still able to catch Schmitter, but the Dutchman has been in fantastic form throughout the 2010-2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup series finishing on the podium in four of the five regattas he has sailed in. Damien Seguin (FRA) maintained his perfect record in the 2.4mR making it three wins out of three regattas sailed in. But he remains in fourth on 60 points in the Standings with Helena Lucas (GBR) in third on 76. Event website
