Sail for Gold 2011: Second place for Belcher and Page

'Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page at the Skandia Sail for Gold 2011 in Weymouth'    Mat Belcher

Skandia Sail for Gold 2011 resulted in a second placed finish on Olympic waters for Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page in Weymouth. The duo shares their thoughts on their continued fight towards the London 2012 Olympics.

It what has likely been one of the toughest World Cup events to date Malcolm and Mathew are happy to report their second place finish on the Olympic waters at the Skandia Sail 4 Gold regatta.

'This week provided us with a unique opportunity to test our equipment against our top competitors in great form, racing in a variety of conditions. We certainly feel more confident in our future directions and will enjoy coming back to Weymouth in a months time (Pre-Olympic regatta).

With Olympic selection on the table for many of the international teams everyone knew the importance of this event. In sometimes highly charged racing the teams were fighting for every single point. Weymouth is a challenging and shifty venue. Hard to read and easy to get wrong. Many of the top teams got more high scores than they would like - us included. However, overall our racing and performance throughout the week pulled us through.

Coming into the medal race we were five points adrift of first but 19 points clear of third. So with everything to gain and nothing to lose we tried to fight for the win. Unfortunately it did not go our way and had to settle for second (for this time anyway). Congratulations to the French team of Leboucher/Garos for their win.

Our second place finish has strengthened our lead in the ISAF Sailing World Cup standings. Coming into the final World Cup starting next week - Kieler Woche, Germany- we now hold a two point lead over the French team.

We are now enjoying a few days off before re-grouping mid week to start to prepare for the last World Cup event for this year starting this coming Saturday.'

Thanks for all the support.
