Skandia Sail for Gold 2011 day four for Team Tunnicliffe

'Team Maclaren discussing tactics at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta 2011'    onEdition ©

Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta 2011's day four conditions were nearly perfect as racing got underway at 9:30 this morning for the repecharge group. Anna Tunnicliffe of Team Maclaren shares a recap of the action.

Sailing began around 11am with three scheduled races to be completed in order to finish our gold fleet round robin. Today we went 2-1, making our round record 3-2 and finishing as the third seed going into tomorrow's quarterfinal round. We will be racing the number six seed, France's Anne Claire Le Berre and team.

The sun was shining and the wind was 10-15kts all day on our course. By the time we started sailing, the wind had settled down a little to a steady direction and races were completed rather quickly allowing us to be done by 1:00pm. Our first race of the day was against Le Berre. We drew a penalty on her in the prestart, led her off the line, and were able to hold her off despite a couple times where she gained a little due to a small shift.

Our second race was against our USSTAG teammates, Sally Barkow and team. This was our loss for the day. We had a great start and led them off the line. We led around the top mark and set up to leeward of them downwind on starboard tack. Three-quarters of the way down the run, she headed up to break the overlap so that we would have to gybe and sail to the mark. We called that the overlap was not broken, so kept sailing the play that would guarantee us the lead at the bottom mark. And after the first couple of green flags from the umpires we assumed that our call was correct.

But when we got to the part of the leg where we knew we would be safe to gybe and lead into the mark, Sally must have flagged again as we gybed and this was when we found out that the umpires had decided that the overlap had been broken and ended up giving us a double penalty meaning that we had to take one immediately. We spun the penalty and tried to catch up a little, but just couldn't quite get enough to make a play on the last leg and we ended up dropping that race.

The last race was against GBR's Lucy Macgregor. We again had a great start and led off the line, then proceeded to pin them almost to the right hand side of the course. After a couple of tacks, we ended up at the top mark with them a length behind us. Downwind, we played the puffs and positioning well to still keep the lead at the bottom mark with them right on our tails. They didn't have a great rounding and we were able to extend a couple lengths out from the mark. From there we forced them out to the right again and over the layline so we opened up a five length lead and went on to win the race.

So now it is on to quarterfinal racing tomorrow morning. It is a first-to-three point series, with the winners advancing onto the semi-finals. The conditions for tomorrow are slightly lighter in the morning before building in the mid morning to early afternoon.

We would very much like to thank our Title Sponsor, Maclaren, our Gold Level Sponsors 11th Hour Racing and Laser Performance, and our Bronze Level Sponsors Carmeuse, Trinity Yachts, and Chicago Match Race Center for their continued support of our campaign for the 2012 Olympic Games.

We would also like to thank US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) and its sponsors for their continued support. Also, thank you to our private donors. Please remember that any and all donations/contributions to our campaign should be made payable directly to either The Sailing Foundation of New York (tax deductible) memo'd Anna Tunnicliffe, or to Anna Tunnicliffe.
