Sail-World.com : Skandia Sail for Gold 2011 day two for Team Maclaren

Skandia Sail for Gold 2011 day two for Team Maclaren

'Team Maclaren - Skandia Sail for Gold'    Team Tunnicliffe

Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta 2011 has seen a windy second day of sailing in Weymouth. Anna Tunnicliffe of Team Maclaren updates on the team's progress.

Winds quickly built throughout the day to the low twenties on the outside courses, but on our course, the wind averaged in the high teens. And even better, the sun was out and the racing was fun. We had another great day and won our three races to take our overall record to 7-0. We now advance to the gold round racing (seeding for the quarter finals) which starts tomorrow.

We were the second group racing today, so we headed out to the race course around 11:30 to watch the last two races of the group racing before us. We picked up a good amount of useful information about the course and used it to help us in our game today. We had three races against the higher seeds in our group. The first two races ended up not being too close; our lead being established shortly after the start.

In the first race, with a bit too much time left before the start, we chased our competitor to the boat end of the line. She luffed head to wind, and we trapped her so that she had two bad options, either exit from the situation on our hip, or be over the line. As it turned out, she ended up exiting the opposite way to us and ended up drifting into the the committee boat, resulting in a penalty. And from there we held her off to the finish.

In the second race, we gave Silke Hahlbrock (GER) a penalty on the initial dial up and controlled her in the prestart. At the start we were just to windward of her and had great speed, enough to where we could get over her and force her away from us to the wrong side of the course. At the top of the leg, we had a couple length lead. She ended up hitting the mark earning a second penalty that she had to take it straight away, which helped us consolidate our lead.

Our final race, our closest race of the day, was against GBR's Team Macgregor. We entered from the port end of the line and Macgregor from starboard. She forced us to tack, resulting in us being quite downspeed. Macgregor tacked away and came back at us a couple of times before we were able to get out of the situation and hook in right behind her. From there we were able to control the prestart.

We led her into the boat end of the line a few seconds late for the start which meant that she had to tack right after the gun. We matched her tack and pinned her to layline. Coming into the first windward mark, we had a couple length lead which grew initially at the top of the downwind leg, only to shrink to inches at the bottom mark, as they caught a puff that we missed and they surfed right up to us.

Up the second beat, we played it about the same, with a couple more tacks as we headed out to the righthand side of the course. At the top, we had a great spinnaker set and surfed away from them to take the win by a couple of lengths and with that, win the round.

It was fun sailing and look forward to tomorrow's sailing against the other gold round teams. The forecast for tomorrow is for big breeze again so racing should be quite exciting. You can check the results and get real-time updates at the regatta website.

We would very much like to thank our Title Sponsor, Maclaren, our Gold Level Sponsors 11th Hour Racing and Laser Performance, and our Bronze Level Sponsors Carmeuse, Trinity Yachts, and Chicago Match Race Center for their continued support of our campaign for the 2012 Olympic Games. We would also like to thank US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) and its sponsors for their continued support.

Also, thank you to our private donors. Please remember that any and all donations/contributions to our campaign should be made payable directly to either The Sailing Foundation of New York (tax deductible) memo'd Anna Tunnicliffe, or to Anna Tunnicliffe.
