Dean's Diary: Extreme 40's in Turkey - Dean Barker reports on Day 5

New Zealand's America's Cup challenge is providing a very strong multihull focus. Dean Barker, Emirates Team NZ skipper and Director of Kiwi Yachting Consultants Nexus AB, reports from Turkey on the second day of the Extreme40 series, in which he is helming Emirates Team NZ . Sailing with Dean Barker are Glenn Ashby (AUS), James Dagg (NZL) and Richard Meacham (NZL). Day 5 in Istanbul Last day in Istanbul Today was the final day of the Extreme Sailing Series Act 3 in Istanbul. It was always going to be a hard day with 5 boats seperated by only 13 points and 10 races to sail. The day was up and down for all the teams that were in contention. Again it was a hard day to find consistency with the nature of the venue. Going into the final double points race we were 5 points behind Artemis and 3 points behind Rothschild. We had a great final race to have a good win and set ourselves up with a good chance of winning. On the final mark rounding Artemis was in 4th place which meant we would win overall, but the boat in 3rd sailed off to the wrong mark allowing Artemis past and handing them the overall win by just 1 point! So damn close after 43 races. It was a great event and we are happy with the progress we are making. It would be nice to win, but not winning certainly keeps you hungry. Back home now to do some more AC45 sailing before we pack it up and send it to Cascais mid June Dean To read earlier editions of Dean Barker's blog click here
