Sekonda RS Feva Nationals 2011 is hosted by South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club, Gwynedd, from Saturday 28th May to Tuesday 31 May 2011.
Day two started with drizzle and no wind – ended with the proverbial champagne conditions. During race one the skies cleared and caused a huge windshift necessitating the course resetting and a fair delay to do so. The Race Officer, Chris Hoppins, elected to run the Silver Fleet first on the shorter outer loop and the Gold Fleet second on the longer inner loop. So far so good with good clean racing.
In the Gold Fleet Owen Bowerman/Charlie Darliing set of like a scalded cat to win the opener from Matilda Dolin/Josh Voller. Q series winners Matt Whitfield/ Gareth Viney had a ‘shocker’ to ‘only’ come seventh. The second race of the day, race five of the regatta, got a bit fraught before the off. General recalls, Z flag start, another general recall and ultimately black flag conditions with still most of the fleet unidentifiably over (an outbreak of the I am Spartacus defence perhaps) saw the race abandoned very shortly after the start. This meant that the next race sailed was in fact race six followed by race seven. So race five will be re-sailed after race nine tomorrow and the Z flag penalties are to be carried forward to the results of that race (no black flags having been notified they can’t be carried forward). Whilst a shame for the few boats to whom that applies at least they get to fight another day without it being a straight DSQ.
For the final two races in the day Matt and Gareth had the measure of the fleet and posted two more bullets to lead from Owen and Charlie overnight by 8pts to 12. Charlie’s Mum and brother – Debbie and Tommy are third a further three points adrift Whilst heavyweights Rob Morris and George Shelley are fourth on 20pts. Tied on 25 in fifth and sixth are Rob and Alice Masterman and Morgan Peach and Herbie Harford respectively.
Silver Fleet is being dominated by Tom Joesbury and Ollie Sellers who started slowly with a second before getting into their stride and posting a pair of bullets with decent leads. Max Matthews and Guy Rivington are fully in touch with the lead scoring a 4,2,5 whilst the overnight third place boat is Jenny Smallwood and Esther Fenton-Jones. Many notable performances abound but I’d like to single out Millie Gibbons and Lily Streatfield because having really come into competitive sailing quite late and only one year ago but having consistently improved over that time.
Whatever happens tomorrow (light winds forecast) the sailors from the 47 clubs represented here are going to have some stories to tell. Hayling Island SC are looking good for top club.
