Easter EuroCup Regatta - 57 boats have found their way to sunny Cannes - crews from Finland, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Italy, France, Switzerland - and Ian Pinnell sailing with his father in law. Day one weather forecast promised 25 knot - and they were there! - all 25 and they have taken some of their friends with them so I believe we had well over 30 knots in the gusts - and on top of that two-three meter waves. The german team Kellner/Schoeler was really fast that day, they won both races - it helps a lot when you can put a 2 m+ and 105 kg+ (a lot of stones) crew in the wire - the rest of us struggled with the conditions, swimmed a lot, some managed to break their mast (like Ian) and others suffered from other gear failures. In the second race that day we made a 'perfect' nosedive and tipped over - actually my first nosedive in 22 years, and besides that we capsized the normal way twice, however we still managed to get in as number six - that illustrates it was a windy day I guess. Day two started with a lot of rain - somebody whispered 'Hammo Island!' - but it cleared up in the afternoon and we got another two races in. The first one was won by the French team Broise/Jamonieres in 15-18 knots, the next one was won by us. Day three races sailed in 15-20 knots - The German team Boger/Dehne won two of them and we got another one. The final outcome was that Kellner/Schoeler won, Swiss team Stauffer/Jacot have sailed consistently and got in on a second overall and we were happy to get on the podium as third. At the prizegiving there was a lot of speeches in French - which took a long time - especially when you don´t understand a word of it. but in general I think it was the best French Eurocup in many years - we got seven races on perfectly set courses, just a minimum of waiting time between races, gate starts. Only downside is, if you bring your wife - there is a lot of very expensive shops in Cannes, so you have to hide her credit card. It would be nice to see some UK boats there next year - especially when you consider the fact that it's possible to sail the first weekend in Italy just one hour from Cannes where we this year got six good races - so two nice regattas at the sunny Mediterranean in just one week in the spring - just do it! 1 GER8651 Kellner Christian and Schoeler Martin 1 1 2 5 7 3 2 2 SUI 8954 Stauffer Florian and Jacot Philippe 3 4 5 2 4 13 3 3 DEN 9023 Bojland Tom and Friis Anders 8 6 4 1 5 1 15 4 GER8990 Achterberg Frieder and Stueckl Wolfgang 4 2 6 4 3 11 7 5 GER9020 Boeger Tim and Dehne Lars 2 12 3 11 1 26 1 6 FRA 8844 Broise Xavier and Des Jamonieres Nicolas 19 5 1 3 9 2 16 7 GER8975 Holzapfel Alexander and Worm Stefan 7 3 13 6 8 5 8 8 SUI 8569 Betschen René & Hollinger Lionel 12 8 8 12 6 9 10 9 SUI 8543 Bart Cedric and Grob Laurent 6 dnf 9 13 15 7 11 10 ITA 8916 Ciferri Enrico and Natali Gabriele 15 10 10 23 13 8 14 11 FRA9050 De Kergariou Herve and Detappe Xavier dnf 18 7 14 16 14 5 12 GER8956 Rasenack Bernd and Priegann Axel 10 dnf 11 7 10 34 9 .... 45 FRA8748 Pinnell Ian and Carvallo Gilles 5 dnf dnc dnc dnc dnc dnc 57 entrants, 52 starters: FRA 27 GER 18 SUI 5 ITA 4 DEN 1 BEL 1 FIN 1 505 International website
